Hardship is a term quickly associated with an assignment abroad. The hardship of living in a place which is too hot or too cold, where they don't eat normal, you have to work hard and are surrounded by untrustworthy savages and that without your girlfriend or family, or worse, with them.
Well, wake-up, companies are not that easy anymore. There are many places in the world you may be sent to where the standard of living is at least as high as where you are coming from and even in the more remote (and hostile) areas life is often made bearable in compounds with all modern conveniences.
That having been said the 'minimum' hardship is usually a little above 1 (times base salary), simply because you are willing to move to a place far from your (extended) family. Places with limited infrastructure for modern-men, high crime rates etc. still command factors considerably higher. Several bureaus whom establish remuneration packages for the big multinationals compile lists with these factors but even then they may be negotiable. Look at your full package.
